Gulzar’s Profile

Chef Gulzar’s full name is Gulzar Hussain and was born on 5^th August 1964. He is Pakistani by birth. He completed his education from the school of Pacsidal which is at Nazimabad and then further studied from the National College which is at North Nazimabad .He also got graduated from Karachi University. Gulzar’s families are basically from Madras and are very fond of food .His Father’s name was Muhammad Hussain. He used to work in Wapda as an Electrical Engineer, and also managed a side business in a restaurant by the name of TOP TASTE in Karimabad.

Gulzar at that time before he became a chef, he was an actor. He advertised in many commercials and also acted in the movie called “Siyaasat” which was produced by Syed Kamal. He also did some Choreography. His father always wanted him to join in the technical field. He was assigned as a hero in a movie produced by Nazar-ul-Islam called “Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein”. But at that time his father always wanted him to be in the technical field

One day, his father forced him to work in his restaurant. While working, a customer complained that the food taste bad. So in order to satisfy the customers, Gulzar told the Cook that the customers are not enjoying their food and that he should take care off. But instead of caring the Cook got ticked and said that if the customers are not enjoying then they cook for them self. Gulzar felt bad on his comments and went straight home so that he can talk to his parents about it. When he went home he told his parents that he wants to join cooking classes as soon as possible. After hearing him, his parents started to laugh and though that he was joking. But Gulzar did not take that as a joke because he was serious about his decision.

This is how his journey started .He travelled to Japan in the year 1988. In Japan there was a Five Star Hotel by the name of “Ginza Tokyo Hotel.” He went there for a scholarship. But before he decided to study there, they made him sign a bond that if he wanted to get trained from this hotel then he has to work as well. After the training was done, Gulzar was paid Rs. 35, 000 on his scholarship. After 3 years, he got a job in this hotel and was paid Rs.45, 000 monthly. It took him one month to apply and was selected in the same month and he arrived in Japan the same month as well. There were a total of 70 people from different countries and Gulzar was the only one from Pakistan.

At first, everything was going great for him, but then everything started to fall apart. His first year was very bad, because his dad had four brothers and among all his brother’s kids, Gulzar was the eldest among them. They loved him so much that he didn’t make him do a single work. But when Gulzar was in Japan he had to do everything by himself. Gulzar was the person, who didn’t even get himself a glass of water, and he also had to cook his own meals in which he faced problems in Halal and Haram food. After a year he had decided that no matter what happens, he has to succeed. When he was mentally prepared, the Japanese considered him small. So the he gradually started working really hard. As the course was completed there were only 12 people left out of 70 and Gulzar was one of them. He was really happy, because when he was working there, Japanese people taught him everything. And when he learned everything, 7 Japanese were working under him and was he happy with it.

While working, he started to like a girl in the same training. She was really co-operative and helpful to him. That girl was half Thai and Japanese. Then one day he finally had the nerve to propose to her. He was positively sure that she wouldn’t say no, but then she said that she will let him tomorrow. He was restless the whole night. And then in next morning she came to him with an answer “Yes”. But she had certain condition for him and that is, he would not go for any night clubs and also would not let him get into a relationship with any girl. And in reply he accepted her demands and was the happiest day of his life.

Then in the year 1994 he got married to her but then sad part occurred because that time his father felt sick and passed away. Gulzar had three brothers and two sisters whom he had to take care of and now they are all well settled. Most of the people in Gulzar’s family are in the technical field.

During his interview Chef Gulzar had said this, “If I wasn’t a chef, I would definitely become an actor”

He sent his wife to Pakistan in 1997. His wife co-operated a lot with his mother and also got an Islamic Education. Then in 1999, his mother got severely sick and after hearing that he decided to come back to Pakistan. He faced a lot of loss and crisis, but nothing means more to him than his mother. He came back to Pakistan in the year 2000 and stayed here for about six months and then went to Thailand with his wife and daughter. In 2005, he realized that daughter was getting older and he couldn’t give her Islamic Education in Thailand. So, He decided to come back to Pakistan for her Islamic Education.

After making his return to Pakistan, there was a Thai Sea Food restaurant in Defense phase 2. There he started to work as a co-coordinator in that restaurant. The restaurant had held a grand opening and everyone came including the media. He started a morning show on Hum TV in 2005 and by the grace of Almighty Allah, he became successful. And in this way, he fulfilled his dream by appearing on a TV show.

His thoughts about food were that, he can eat any type of Bar-B-Que. He also loves Sea Food and thus enjoys cooking Sea Food. Japan is the country in which he kept promises that he would never forget the journey he had in Japan. Everything should have a system. Like he can get angry at anyone no matter whom it is. He is a truthful and honest person. He wants to be friends with those people who have the same personality as him. If he would get a chance to become a politician then would definitely accept it so that he systematized his country like reducing all bad deeds as in corruption, emanation, and change the thoughts and opinions of people who are trying to divide our nationality and culture. And not let foreigners govern our country. He would want to handle the issues by himself for his country. The army and politicians have always been under a lot of pressure and this is because of their weakness. The Nation doesn’t have integration. One of his wishes is that he would be invited to a talk show. Whenever he gets upset, he usually call his best friends or listen to any sort of fast music in order to divert his mind. And whenever he is happy, he takes his family out somewhere, so that he can fulfill his family wishes and also can enjoy it as well. Till this day he had done shows on the channels of ARY, TV ONE, INDUS, AAJ, MASALA, and HUM TV. 

Gulzar also said that if anyone criticizes him about his personal life, he locks himself in a room so that he can think about himself without any distraction, about what he does not have. Then he tries to fulfill the expectations of the person who criticized him.

His aim is to establish his own cooking institute which will be based on university level and will provide Practical and Theory as well. And also can bring any foreign institute into Pakistan which has the value of the education given to his institute.
